I was also thinking along the same lines. I have a data file, settings
file and a data processing script in my project. Perhaps we could team up
to create some base class that could be inherited by different readers?

Sounds like a plan... :-) Unfortunately I can't start work on it
now... I have way to much on my plate at the moment.
But you could help in the thinking?
I spoke to the Author of "Help Scribble" (www.helpscribble.com). He
wrote exactly what I am trying to do, but for Kylix. I was hoping to
twist his arm in releasing the code as open source for use with
Lazarus - seeing that Kylix is dead in the water. He didn't bite, but
he did explain some of how he managed to do it. Maybe more people
could send a kind request email to him. :-)
To see how it looks, download the Linux program EditPad Lite
(http://www.editpadpro.com/linux.html) from the same author and view
the help.
I really doubt if we could get the sources. The application is commercial.
