I run Ubuntu as well, and don't have any such paths in my setup. I
choose to install FPC and Lazarus in the /opt directory.

I always use the following directions:
 http://www.howtoforge.com/lazarus_ubuntu

It mentions the amd64 packages, but I just replaced those with
standard 32bit x86 packages. I normally start by downloading a
prebuild FPC release, so I don't have to do the bootstrap process to
get a compiled ppc386 executable. I follow the directions and in
30minutes max, I have the latest FPC and Lazarus from SubVersion
running on my system.

Maybe I should create a VMWare image with Linux, FPC and Lazarus
installed. Copy my scripts to it as well, so getting updates from
SubVersion and compiling them is a breeze. I can even switch between
FPC versions (thanks to tips from the fpc mailing list)

VMWare player is free after all. Would anybody be interrested in
something like that? I wouldn't be able to host the image for very
long though - I only have a limited internet bandwidth per month.
Maybe we could host it on SourceForge.

I did this at work for Windows 2000 to test fpGUI. I develop under
Linux only. I used 7zip to compress the image to a 200Mb file. I am
sure I can get Linux even smaller.

Oh and the path was created by the Ubuntu library unpacker which I think
