The Lazarus team is glad to announce the 0.9.18 release. This release is

This release can be downloaded from the sourceforge download page:

Daft question....

Is downloading this version release advisable or is updating via svn
(which I do on a nearly daily basis) sufficient?
If you are happy with using svn, I would not download the release.

I'm perfectly happy with the svn, but I was just wondering if there are (significant for me as a linux user) differences between this release and svn.

svn is newer and more up to date. You can install the svn version anywhere you wish, the installers have a fixed location.

The advantage of an installer may be, that some symlinks in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin are made, so you can start it easier. And you don't have to igure out how to compile everything. But since you already have done that, there is no reason to download an release.
