There are still some warnings, the default font is sometimes not
available (needed for autosizing), the ExtTextOut function is
amazingly slow, the MouseEnter/Leave does not always work, the ...

Yes, there is hope: Sebastian Guenther is creating the cairo bindings,
which could help to solve many of the hard problems and give some real
nice possibilities (alpha, hardware acceleration, antialiased
drawings, ...).
