if I use gdb v6.0 distributed with Lazarus things work as they should. The
app also seems to compile a lot quicker.

Does this also happen if you use the gdb 6.0 distributed with lazarus?
If you used an installer to install in c:\lazarus, you will find it in
c:\lazarus\mingw\bin.
