I have done similar things, a fullscreen form freely positioned at 0,0
without any window manager (maybe this made my problems).

Neverheard about that behaviour. Have you tried leaving out "StayOnTop"?

I think so, gtk1 has some ... funny ideas about where the focus should
be. This is especially true if using a notebook widget.

Try using the "TAB" key some times. If the focus appears you can send
your form a TAB char as fake input after showing. Or you use

        "gtk_widget_grab_focus(GTK_WIDGET(yourwidget))"

for a more clean solution.
