I forgot to state that I have changed the "subject" as we are drifting into 
wider waters than the conversion of utf8 to the (outdated), but more compact 
ISO system.

Just so that I do not appear to be just lazy, here are some definitions of SO 
from http://computing-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/Shift%20Out

SO = Significant Other
SO = Shift Out

It would be better to write with less ambiguity...
