I recomend that you try the subversion version of Lazarus then. Any
changes will be made to subversion anyway, and you won't be able to
test them if you don't use it.

I will do that, but not immediately. The position is that I had a reasonable degree of confidence that I could get FPC 2.0.4 working on SPARC after the work I did last Summer and that version- as I understand it- is known to compile the current version of Lazarus as released. I don't want to start working with both an untried version of the compiler and a new set of sources... tomorrow, perhaps but not today :-)

The current situation appears to be that enabling the calls to DebugLn() and fixing gtkwinapiwindow.pp so that they compile fixes- or at least changes- the problem. That suggests that it might in fact be an FPC code-generation problem.
