The problem with Microsoft Windows "OEM" licenses is that they are for a
certain configuration only (and not transferable). The "Retail" licenses
are for any PC hardware, but they are 3 times as expensive.
You might try to have Windows pre-installed from rescue, make a copy of
that boot partition. Resize partitions to install Linux or whatever, and
try run VmWare with the copied partition. My experience is that Windows
gives a BSOD (non-compatible IDE controller and such junk), but YMMV.

OEM licenses are tolerant to hardware change
well isn't VMWare install a kind of motherboard change
may be you'll have to activate your re-installed XP by phone
and explain to the Nice Guirl that your mobo died and you've reinstalled
with new mobo ;-)
