There is a way you can apply profile to images before print. You could use tifficc utility to convert from source profile, sRGB, embedded profile or whatever to printer profile. After then, you can send the resulting tiff directly to printer. On depending on printer driver, you can also make the separation by means of tifficc, but I'm unsure if the printer driver would support direct CMYK at all. Of course this is without programming... if you are planing to make your own RIP, then of course lcms would be useful.
