After some careful testing with Photoshop's soft proofing, I'm reasonably confident that the soft
proofing *does* work ok when using the Eye One Display monitor profiles. As pointed out
to me, the  V4 ICC spec mandates that the whitepoint be D50, so the Eye One Display profiles
are to the standard.  I originally thought this was causing a problem with soft proofing, but I think
I was mistaken.
 
The issue regarding converting to the Eye One Display profiles using absolute intent still stands,
but I agree that this probably isn't very important, most of the time. (I think it's a bit of a shame, though)
 
So - please accept my apologies. I am sorry for jumping to conclusions.
