Since my previous post, I did some more experimenting, and discovered that if I create the XYZ to monitor profile transform using cmsFLAGS_NOTPRECALC then I get the correct answers using XYZ values with D50 assumed ref white. (By "correct" I mean I get RGB values out that match what I would get when going from sRGB to monitor RGB via a direct transformation.) So apparently, precalculating the transform in this case gives the wrong answers, both numerically AND visually.
 
Any thoughts on this?
