A2B1 is used for soft proofing, or am I mistaken?

Mike, A2B1 is the relative colorimetric device -> PCS transformation. Basically it is used whenever the profile is used on the input side of a transformation with colorimetric intent. But yes, for an output profile, it can be also used for soft proofing, in conjunction with the B2A<x> tables.

Is this a generally unsolved problem, or do proprietary solutions
exist?

I fully agree with Marti, that this is not an easy task. But
basically, any profiler must somehow solve this kind of problem. If
you want to look at an example, see http://www.argyllcms.com/

Thanks, Gerhard. I did look at the fixrev program, if that's the one you
mean.

I did not mean a particular program, but the whole framework, whatever part you find useful for the task you need to do (maybe even some of the low-level libraries, like e.g. RSPL, a very central component of Argyll, which fits and interpolates scattered data points with n-dimensional splines, including constrained reverse interpolation).

Regards,
Gerhard
