I should have also added that these testimages included an ICC profile. I don't know much about these profiles, but it seemed to be the standard 'Adobe RGB' profile, that thus served the purpose of defining the particular RGB flavor relative to XYZ. I think that is more or less the general policy of Adobe, avoiding the Lab in TIFF confusion alltogether, by storing RGB together with a profile. The image color space is, indeed, as perfectly scientifically defined, this way, as it would have been in Lab minus confusion. Or at least, that's my possibly quite limited understanding.
