I’m not quite sure, if I understand where chromatic adaptation fits into the picture of the whole processing chain of color management. 
Do you know of any introductory material regarding the concrete transformation steps that are typically involved (especially in CMM engines like ICM).
This is because I’d like to use littlecms or optionally ICM and need to get approximately equal results, but ICM
results differ widely. I suppose they use some sort of chromatic adaptation transform, that cannot be eliminated.
 
Any hints that might clarify this issue will be appreciated!
