It sounds like you have an absolute/relative intent mixup somewhere,
or maybe a whitepoint in the wrong place.

If it helps, I did a colorimetric poster system a few years ago for
The National Gallery. We had an average dE76 between the original
object and the ink jet print of about 4 units over the 24 patches of
the Macbeth Color Checker.
