Because

1) I don't know if other viewers implement the feature and if they
don't they may eventually implement it.
2) It is available on every major OS.
3) It is developped by a company who has interest in maintaining it.
4) It is freely (as in wine) available.
5) There are big chances this plugin is already installed on your
system.

When I looked into that 6-7 years ago the selection of free or open
source vrml plugins was not very reliable and standards were partially
implemented. This may have changed but I don't think vrml or x3d will
ever get momentum. For 3D in the browser in the future I think it is
more likely you'll get a 3D api via something in the style of the
html5 canvas.

Is there now a reliable plugin for vrml/x3d that shares most of the
above characterstics ?

Best,

Daniel
