Paul, I've been trying to reproduce the issue with no success. Please see attached a very small program that do the same you report to crash, but it works fine on all the platforms I've tried. I have double checked MaxOSX (10.5.8) on a PowerPC, it works fine to me.
Mybe there is something in your setup that makes the bug to show up, so please try to compile and run this sample.
