Problem was: no tls connection Suse 10.1
Solution is: if I'm feeling foolish I feel right
After checking all ways, installing and deinstalling openldap and openssl
trying on my notebook and on the server, I found one hint in another thread:
"Problem solved it was a wrong character in slapd.conf"
I have also a wrong character ... just a few blanks in front of the
following extract out of my slapd.conf
#some comment
TLSCACertificateFile /etc/openldap/cacert.pem
TLSCertificateFile /etc/openldap/servercrt.pem
TLSCertificateKeyFile /etc/openldap/serverkey.pem
so - sorry to everybody who helped me
