Since your question is specific to OpenLDAP, you maybe should have asked on the [email protected] mailinglist.

However, a third alternative for you would be to specify an appropriate "loglevel" in the slapd.conf file (see man 5 slapd.conf) so that bind attempts are logged via the normal syslog facility.
