I think in most places LDAP is used for very similar purposes.

1.) An authorization source; as well as some authentication for lame
apps & clients that don't support things like Kerberos.  This includes
being an NSS provider.
2.) White pages
3.) SMTP, DHCP, and DNS configuration backend
4.) Group backend for various services like OpenNMS, Wildfire (XMPP) and
RADIUS;  this is similar to #1.
5.) To store user preferences / profiles for applications like Horde or
an Intranet.

OpenLDAP's back-sql/back-meta, etc... also allow it to be used as a way
to federate datasources.  One example is using back-sql to provide LDAP
access to address book like data stored in a traditional database:
