Upgrade to a reasonable release of OpenLDAP (i.e., OpenLDAP 2.4.8) and then
look at the slapo-unique overlay.
As for Java, most people use JNDI, but it has its issues. There is also
JLDAP, which can be checked out from the OpenLDAP CVS repository.
