Hi,

VMware's FT feature mirrors the VM operations in memory and enables seamless
fail-over. Basically you have another physical server that's in sync and takes
over the network and I/O operations from the point of failure. This is
completely different from HA or clustering in the traditional sense. IBM, HP,
and Oracle lack this in their virtualization solutions. But it should also be
noted that VMware FT is a very expensive feature and realistically if you want
that, you should go for a hardware option that assists in the FT feature, like
the NEC/Stratus ftServer systems which use ASICs to mirror at the hardware
level inside the same chassis. Otherwise, you'll loose what ever was in CPU
cache, NIC/HBA buffers, etc. which could lead to data loss.

Realistically, I rarely ever see any VMware shops implement FT because of the
costs and realization that for it to truly work properly you need specialized
hardware. Not to mention you need dedicated hardware. I've only seen this used
in financial services where credit card processing is being done. So for most
shops this kind of fault tolerance is overboard and cost prohibitive.

To my knowledge neither IBM Power VM nor OVM does that without HA cluster
software. I think solaris cluster would need AVS as well not really sure. Or
not a failover cluster but a parallel sorta hybridish thing

Thanks for the response, I was hopping that with this update for VM for SPARC
there will also be an equal option like VMware FT. If I understand how FT
works, it copys/transfers the memory bits live all the time to an active stand
by server, next in case the primary server is not available (crashed) the
secondary server becomes active without any notice of the app.

For example we have thousands of ssh sessions connected to multiple Solaris
servers, with Live Migration (at a scheduled maintenance window) this sessions
wont need to reconnect and will continue to run, the same and even better would
be if a live migration with Fault Tolerance is available in case the server
crashes the stand by server will auto activate and no ssh sessions will be lost.
