You really want to go with Solaris 11 not S10. The new storage and network
drivers make a difference.

Subject: [ldoms-discuss] SPARC T4-4 For Multiple Oracle Domains

Hello,

I'm looking for input on how to best provison multiple LDOMs suitable for
Oracle database workloads onto a T4-4 Server.

I'm trying to understand how to best partition CPU's to what I belive would be
two service domains, and 4 Oracle database guest domains.

Some of the design considerations are the following:

Solaris 10 8/11;
ZFS root and data filesystems;
EMC PowerPath;
IPMP w/VLAN tagging;
Sun Cluster to allow oracle instance failover to other T4-4 domain.

In order to provide maximum serviceability, I belive I'll need to have the 6
domains per physical server:
- 1 control (primary) domain to provide ldom admin, FC and Network I/O virtual
device service domains for PCI0;
- 1 I/O service domain to provide FC and Network I/O virtual device services
for PCI1;
- 4 guest domains for Oracle database workloads.

I don't think the primary domain should also serve as a oracle database domain
as well. I know it can, but the quesion is should it?

If there are two service domains, how many CPU's per I/O service domain should
be poached from a particular CPU in order to service it is recommended? I'm
thinking 1 core per service domain (CPU0/C0 & CPU2/C0, for the service ldoms)
may be suitable. Thoughts?

What considerations should be made for provisoning the OS root disks for each
Guest Domain? WIth a T4-4 with 8X100GB SSDs, any opinions on how best to
provision the 6 domains? ie: One large zpool with os disks carved out? or a
zpool per pair of disks, or a zpool out of a pair of disk for service domains,
and another 6 disk zpool to service the guest domains, or perhaps direct i/o
for disks.. there seems to be many options.. just looking for recommendations
on this. I can't seem to find a best practice on this.

Any and all help appreciated. Thanks!
