Matt,

Yes, Ransom knows what I'm doing. (I used to be CTO for the family history
department.) Ransom has been working for 3 years now evangelizing
open-source development inside the Church, and he's doing a great job. If
the Church eventually decides to create a website like this I would be happy
to work with them.

BTW, my understanding is that the open-source position that was being
advertised is for the Church's ICS department, not family history. They're
separate departments. Eric Denna, the Church's CIO (and therefore over ICS)
likes open source and is making good progress there.

It's also interesting to note that there are two open-source projects
currently approved for the family history department by the bretheren:
creating an open-source name and place standards database, and creating a
web search engine for family history. Both of those projects were approved
two years ago while I worked there (Ransom and I worked together on getting
them approved), but unfortunately there were and still are no resources
available within the department to work on them. Not coincidentally, these
two ideas form the basis of what WeRelate.org is all about. So yes, if the
Church decides to get involved in open source as Ransom envisions, I would
love to join with them and Ransom knows this.

I think it's just a matter of time before the Church starts working on
open-source projects. I just didn't want the time in the meantime to be
wasted. And I believe that it's too burdensome to the Church for its
members to expect Church Headquarters to initiate and run every good idea.
We need to be willing to do good works on our own, which from what I've read
is what this group is all about.

PS, What's your last name? Are you still in PA? You can email me
personally at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you like.
