Along those lines, an idea that struck me the last time I read the Book of Mormon is that the book's viewpoint is narrowly focused on gospel teaching, with only scant historical details. According to Nephi and Mormon, this was by design. I imagine the happenings among the people were actually quite complex and varied like today. So for every migration that's recorded in the Book of Mormon, there were probably hundreds of others that the book didn't report.
