I've been trying to grab the stream from the Priesthood Session of Conference
(since its not available as an mp3 on the site). First question is, is what I
am trying to do bad? It came to me last night that they may not have an mp3
version for a reason? Second question is, if its not a bad thing, does anyone
have any pointers for grabbing the stream? I've tried several things with
mplayer to grab it (even as simple as mplayer -dumpstream <link to asx file
here>), but that seemed to core dump on me. If anyone has pointers, please
let me know, I really really enjoyed the Priesthood session and would just
like the audio to listen to on my long commute to work.
Thanks,

The only stream I can see on the website for the Priesthood session is
the video for the American Sign Language. There isn't a link for even
an audio only version. Despite this, my computer was able to grab the
video stream with no problem. Packages in Linux that you will need to
watch this are your favorite media player, w32codec-all or a very
similar package (contains the codecs for Quicktime, wmv, avi, and a
bunch of others), and any packages that those may require that are not
already installed. You may also need to point your video player to the
install directory of the Windows codecs. As I run mainly Suse, I can
tell you where you can find the packages for Suse. I would assume that
you can get Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, and other packages from various
sources, if they are not already available in your currently configured
apt/rpm/portage/yum/etc. repositories. Googling for w32codec turned up
quite a list of sources.
If you're running a Suse box, make sure to get as many of your media
player packages as possible from the Packman repository. Information
for the yast version of the repository can be found at
http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories . There is
also an apt4rpm version, but you'll have to Google for it as I avoid
using apt on suse (I messed up my suse system once by using apt for
every piece of software I wanted to download).
If it still doesn't work (for example, mplayer plugin starts but won't
play the video), try updating mplayer. I've had times that mplayer
wouldn't actually play the video stream, but the problem goes away when
I update to a newer version (using the one that was packaged for the
suse packman repository).
