Is there any software package that can help connect family members by combining birth, marriage, and death records?

A friend of mine was doing something like this a while ago, and I now find myself doing the same thing. I am going through the birth, marriage, and death records for a small town where my ancestors are from. I sometimes run into someone with a last name that appears on my tree, but this person is (so far) unconnected. I have been recording these events, and when done, would like to construct the families

For a birth record, it will usually list the parents and sometimes the wife's (or even husband's) parents, and sometimes a sponsor / godparent.

For marriage records, it lists the couple and their parents, and sometimes witnesses.

For death record, it lists the father and mother or children, and sometimes the spouse for an adult

Theoretically, you should be able to take the individual records and match birth records to marriage records to build families, and then death records to birth records to get the lifespan. Of course, sometimes records are missing, and sometimes the names are spelled differently, etc. so it has to be a soundex match or something like that. Hopefully it would use the dates when matching records so it doesn't confuse parents and children.

Once the trees are constructed, you should be able to generate a GedCom file.

Does anyone know of such a program? If not, I might end up writing something if/when I get time. ;^)
