I have not completely confirmed this, but it is my suspicion that when a
clerk goes to move a record of of the unit, and he specifies the new
address and/or new unit name, if ALL the contact information is not
re-entered in the fields, it is stripped when the record moves.  In other
words, even if the member's cell number and email address in MLS haven't
changed and a clerk only enters the new address, only that address will
get transfered to the new ward, no phones or email.  Seems like a bug to
me.

Again, after seeing the same thing many times, this was my suspicion and I
haven't taken the time to really identify what is going on.  MLS support
may have a clearer answer.

Hey, but at least the Temple Recommend Expiration Dates transfer!  Maybe
there are legal ramifications, but it would be great if the charitable
donation records did the same.  No more calling your old ward when
tax-time arrives.
