Great ideas Bill. Here's a demo of the homegrown solution that our stake
uses:
http://www.returnandreport.net/demo/ward/eq/

It might not be complete, but I think it does many things you suggest
except allow editing companionships and assignments online (it's driven by
MLS exports where editing is done) and the statistics and visit history
can't currently be uploaded back to MLS for synchronization with the
Quarterly Report or Stake MLS. Secretaries have been doing that manually.
I whole heartedly support any effort to reduce the line-up for the ward
computer;)

Not everyone in my ward/stake has lds.org accounts, but *everyone* (at
least every home or visiting teacher with internet access) currently logs
on to this site at least once per month. As far as usefulness to ward
leaders, I put this at the same level as the the online membership
directory and ward calendar.

Like some the the ward mapping apps we've seen recently, this could easily
be open-sourced and shared with or hosted for other units except for the
valid concern HQ has regarding uploading MLS data to a non-lds.org server.

Until Church HQ gives us a sanctioned mechanism to build on-line apps that
contain protected membership data, I'm not sure how this HT/VT tool in
particular could be shared and improved upon, other than as a
less-effective offline tool. Maybe others of you have ideas?

encourage leaders to perform the imports in a timely manner.
