One thing I really find helpful working remotely is Xnest. If you setup your XDMCP to respond to remote X terminals it is very handy to connect remotely via ssh and run the command "Xnest :30 -query 127.0.0.1" Xnest lets you run the full gnome/kde/ice/X desktop remotely. ssh keeps the datastream encrypted so the traffic is secure. If you don't know how to setup your X let me know. I'll setup a step by step instructions and post them.
