* Is there a way to authenticate users against their lds.org log in
information?

Not currently. But I have been working with the new FamilySearch API and in
the new system it would be easy to authenticate a PGV user as a FamilySearch
user. I don't know if there is a way in the API to tell whether that user is a
member of the church though. Currently all users of the api are members of the
church, but that won't always be the case.

 * Is there a way to hide LDS ordinance data from non-LDS users (eg:
groups)?

There is not a notion of groups, though others have requested it. But you can
hide facts (including ordinances) from users individually. So if you want to
hide ordinance data from this new user you can.

 * Is it really necessary to hide LDS ordinance data from non-LDS members?

For the Church and FamilySearch, yes they need to hide that data from
non-members. However, IMHO, for you personally I don't think it is necessary
to hide the data regarding your own ancestors. I don't think we need to hide
our beliefs. Should we put the candle under the bushel or on the hill? If it
turns out that the person is not a member then it will be a good opportunity
for missionary work.
