As far as gedcom 6 goes, It's been around for ever and nothing has
happened with it. There are other competitors to gedcom 6. As far as
I know none of xml competitors to gedcom 5.5 have been adopted by the
main stream. Various open source programs do have the ability to
import/export some of these formats. Here is a list of potential
genealogy modeling languages to replace gedcom though it is by no
means complete :

GeniML: http://www.softwarerenovation.com/igenie/
Gedml: http://users.breathe.com/mhkay/gedml/index.html
GenXML: http://cosoft.org/genxml/
FamilyML: http://www.vitiello.org/familyML.htm
Gedcom 6: http://www.biographiks.com/pleasant/gedcom-xml.htm

As far as I know it seems they are generally quite stagnant at the
moment. There are forums that discuss what data model to use, but
there doesn't seem to be any real standards emerging.
