The latter I know about (more); I've not seen busybox tar segfault
before.

Probably.  Look in /etc/profile and see if there is one there.  Not
creating core files is the best for a secure environment - but also the
worst for a development environment.  By their nature these two
environments don't mix :-O

I thought the most recent Oxygen had busybox 0.50pre ....

Looks like its time for an Oxygen release...
