Can we please have Reply-to munging on? I just sent this to the LRP
list...force of habit, automatic pilot, absent-mindedness, whatever...

Our experiences would differ, then.
It may be that some modules are more sensitive than others, and
that I've consistently been lucky enough to deal with modules
that are flexible while you have consistently had bad luck. This
is entirely likely, in fact.
2.2.16 should not be uniquely flexible, I agree.
My workstation box is Slackware 7.0. I have downloaded the 2.2.16
kernel source fresh from ftp.kernel.org, and compiled kernels for
my workstation, in which I have all routing, firewalling, and all
other such options turned completely off.
Using this .config, I have compiled two or three NIC modules for
LRP users who have 2.2.16 kernels. I did not change any of the
aforementioned routing/firewalling options.
One possible difference: I am in the habit of enabling the "Set
version information for all kernel modules" option.
