it's Gimp alright -- XTNS > Script Fu > Logos > Particle Trace. Font Size
100, Hit Rate .20, Edge Width 2, base color black, background color white
(e.g. the defaults in Gimp 1.1.29). I added the text, then took the
Slashdot Tux logo, erased its shadow and shrank it down, then adjusted
color balance for shadows, midtones, and highlights to 9/100/9 for the
X-Files look :-) I suppose there should be a border and some different
sizes for badging and such, but that depends on everyone else liking it as
much as I do.
