        Yes, it's very much like a password. I've forgotten mine
a few times now and had to perform the scared dance of many
swords to get the Lucent AP to reset.
        Also, in regards to FHSS versus DSSS (I think it was
in Mike's followup to yours), the AP itself has PCMCIA slots
to plug in the 802.11 radio of whatever flavor. The code in
the AP doesn't know/care which modulation is being used. So
the same PCMCIA radio that goes into a client goes into these
AP's.
        Market wise..my impression is that the vendors have been
selling the cards at cost, and the AP's at incredible markup.
Even Apple's AirPort AP is 4x what the card costs. None of
them are eager to shake that tree, I'm sure.
