You're jumping from elemental to molecular!  Of course, by choosing to start
with Oxygen, you don't have many upgrade paths (the only more reactive
elements are Chlorine & Fluorine IIRC).  Of couse there are always those
Molecular Acids (If we can round up some of those Aliens & Space Marines).
Or you could go to less reactive elements (winding up with noble gasses) as
the distributions improve.

What about a system using isotopes...you could start with the initial
release being an extremely unstable isotope, and follow up with
progressively more stable ones, moving to a new element with each major
release.

OK, I'm going back to work now...sorry for wasting everyones bandwith ;-)
