Long filenames are usually attractive, but not when they cause headaches.

XXXXXX.list - overwritten by multiple packages... complicated

foo.list - not much improvement, hmmm?

fooBecomesALongNameBeforeYouKnowItanditsUNSTOPPABLE.list - well, getting
there, but the _contents_ of this file are already defined, and you still
need a way to map the long filename back to an 8.3 filename for backup.

Oh, and minix only handles 30 character filenames.
