I did two things:
a) I had to create a mime-type for .lrp files
b) I had to omit the space. However, while this caused the file to be
downloaded as binary, it displayed it anyway instead of saving it, so I
don't think this is the right solution here. Maybe this would work better
with a "wget"-type applicaton.
Creating the mime-type on Windows was odd, because apparently it couples
the Netscape mime-type list with the standard registry mime-types list,
which requires an application. I picked an application to assign
(notepad.exe), gave it the "application/octet-stream" mime type, and when
I went back to change that to WinZip, a mostly different dialog
came up that allowed me to indicate that the file would be saved rather
than opened with an application, which was my main goal in creating the
mime-type anyway.
When I used the space, it complained that there was no filed named
"...apkg.lrp .", so it looks like the server received the filename with
the space appended.. From
http://www.w3.org/Addressing/URL/5_BNF.html#z14, it looks like this syntax
is standard, without the space, so I don't know why the Netscape note
indicated that a space was needed. I was using a friend's machine with
Netscape 4.7 on Windows 98. It would be good to get as many people to try
this as possible, since the Netscape note indicated that it only worked
sometimes.
Having the mime-type in place, apparently Netscape now recognizes that an
lrp file is binary even without specifying the type in the URL.
So, to summarize:
ftp://anyftpserver.net/somefile.ext
Netscape: a browser mime-type setting for ".ext" will suffice to
insure binary download
MS IE: Seems to use some variation of the MS MIME-type algorithm,
usually just works.
ftp://anyftpserver.net/somefile.ext;i
Netscape: will force binary download, but without a browser MIME-type
preference it will go ahead and "display" the file.
MS IE: Doesn't recognize this URL syntax.
http://anyhttpserver.net/somefile.ext
Netscape: always believes the MIME-type supplied by the server. If
_server_ is configured correctly, works great. If
_server_ is NOT configured with a mime-type for ".ext" then
there is _no way_ for Netscape to download this file to a
non-unix operating system. User must use IE, or complain
loudly to the web server administrator.
MS IE: Uses the MS MIME-type algorithm, usually just works.
