Seems to run through libsafe.so.1; removal of libsafe.so.1 "fixes"
it. However, is the bug really in libdl.so?
Because of these initial problems, /etc/ld.so.preload was truncated to
zero bytes and /etc/ld.so.preload.note explains the details. libsafe
will remain until this is resolved definitively.
libsafe v2 seems to break everything in sight.... at least everything
segfaults against it. I wonder if libsafe v2 requires binaries to be
compiled against glibc 2.1.3; they state that libc5 binaries are NOT
supported and will segfault; will glibc 2.0.7 binaries do the same?

I am hoping to get this in a state usable for CDROM booting by first
part next week. My real goal is to create a bootable CDROM which is
not limited to CDROM package configurations: this requires query://
work and work well. I'll need to make sure that loading of a package
list will work from the query:// URL.
