David,
Midori is using *.tar.gz for their packages.
This reminds me. At the embedded conference, I asked the embedded Linux
distribution vendors about their support for floppies and generic images.
The only two that support both are HardHat Linux and Midori. So, the only
currently available bases for us are LRP(heavily
modified)/Oxygen/EigerStein(updated), HardHat, and Midori. HardHat uses rpm
with a stripping script, and Midori uses *.tar.gz.
There were a couple of other interesting things I learned. Lineo, is
producing a router (hardware+software) based on Linux 2.0.x. It isn't
certified, but the price point for the low end version is ~$100. None of
the hardware vendors had SBCs with three ethernet ports. Although, many of
them indicated this was something they planed on delivering soon. Joining
the ELC may be a good idea. They had a presentation booth that was
available for members to show their products/projects. It was empty most of
the time, so availability isn't a problem. I appears to me that the first
thing every embedded distribution produces is a router. I had some
conversations on the advantages of real-time for QoS also. Opinions were split.
Ray and I did get together and talk. :)
He probably has greater insight into the significant things that happened.
