I have read that ramfs was designed to alleviate some problems with the
ramdisk driver. I think the difference was that /dev/ram* grows up to the
maximum size allocated, as the filesystem driver requests. However, disk
space is not returned. The initially small size of the ramdisk is
unfortunately misleading, since all ramdisks really have to be the same
size.
