There is actually very little to know about UPX for compressing
kernels. All the various executables (e.g. Linux, Windows) work the
same way. That is, you can compress a Linux kernel using the
Windows or the Linux UPX 1.11 executable. UPX autodetects the
kind of file. When compressing kernels, UPX will report to you that
it knows the file is a kernel. If it doesn't recognise a kernel as such,
it didn't work.

UPX is terrific software that is very easy to use and appears to be
very reliable. Their web site has dire warnings about not using
version 1.11 for anything critical. Here on the Leaf list we haven't
heard of any problems with UPX compressed kernels that I know
of. My opinion is that it's OK to include compressed kernels on
Leaf distributions as long as we clearly and prominently document
the fact and make uncompressed kernels also available. There is
value for everyone in getting a lot of testing of UPX-compressed
kernels done.

If anyone is using Leaf for a mission-critical purpose, that should
probably be more cautious and obey the UPX web site warning.
