In response to KP Kirchdörfer & David Douthitt's comments
on ntp vs rdate, chrony has been working for me:
http://www.rrbcurnow.freeuk.com/chrony

Its an ntp client & server that's designed for dialup
connections, and machines that aren't always on. It uses
ntp when available, and the hardware clock when not. It
can also act as an NTP server for the local lan.

I've packaged it as an lrp (~60k) if anyone's interested.
Sorry, I don't have a website to upload to, but I'd be
happy to upload the package if someone can point me in the
right direction.
