Hmm...the Invalid argument error can happen for any of a number of reasons.
It's quite odd that changing your kernel fixed the problem...nothing related
to QoS is enabled unless you specifically set several network.conf
varilables, and install the user-space QoS configuration tools.  Can you
possibly e-mail me a copy of your network.conf file so I can see if I can
reproduce the problem here on a test system?
