I am puzzled trying to identify the advantages of this approach over the
IDE interface approach, as in
http://www.advantech.com/products/PCD-1240V.asp.

Cost seems like a possible argument, but if it requires buying chips off
of distributors or NDAs it could be limited in application to engineered
systems.
