The gcc version shouldn't make too much of a size difference,
by chance are you using the "Mandrake source" to compile with?
Last I heard, Mandrake was still using RH's Alan Cox (AC) branch
source which is different than the "Linus" branch source that
Debian is using. 

Just a thought...  :-)
