I don't use GRUB myself, but are you allowed the spaces in "vga = 769";
shouldn't that be "vga=769"?

According to "Using GRUB as an alternative boot loader for Bering"
(Chapter 14 of the Bering User's Guide) you need to follow the "boot"
statement with another invocation of "initrd=initrd.lrp".
