Hi everybody, I'm opening a new thread because first of all, this discussion isn't about webconf packages anymore, and also, because I don't want to single out the person whom I would be responding to.
Ok, lets get this straight - the way I read it, Eric asked twice if somebody (emphasis, that's somebody other than Eric) would be willing to work on creating a USB image (and I add to that, even though maybe it was implied, a script for creating such an image, so one doesn't have to manually re-create it every time there's an update). I'm sure that all the links and suggestions that have been mentioned in recent mails will be helpful to whoever will create that image - but the way I read it, nobody has volunteered yet, right? So it may be a little premature to think about what will be possible once such an image exists. What I'm trying to say is this: the Bering uClibc crew (and this is mainly Eric and kp - I'm not trying to sound like I'm adding anything significant to the project at this point) is trying to work on its own TODO list (release 2.4, replacing gcc 3.3.3 with something that can be built with gcc 4 but something that can still compile a 2.4 kernel, upgrade to uClibc 0.9.28 - all those things are aimed towards creating Bering uClibc 3.0) and creating a USB bootable image is just not at the top of that list. So if open source is actually more than just getting what one needs for free - can somebody of the people who actually need a USB bootable image chip in? I'm sure the Bering uClibc crew (I'm not speaking for anybody but myself, but it would be the first time that somebody is denied help by the members of the Bering uClibc team) will help solve issues that come up, but right now, we have more than enought on our plates, and the things we have on our TODO list rank higher (to us - I'm not expecting everybody to agree with that) than creating a USB image, especially since we have all of the pieces already in place (initrd_usb.lrp plus documentation, if I recall correctly). I hope nobody will feel offended - I'm not trying to kill the discussion, I'm just trying to make sure nobody's expecting Eric or the Bering uClibc crew to provide a USB image any time soon. In short, if nobody else decided to give it a try, it might be quite a while until something like a USB image exists.
